Overhead Glazing Design: Laminated Glass for Canopies and Skylights

Glass above occupied areas needs particular attention to breakage retention, support, drainage and maintenance. Canopies and skylights may look similar, but their thermal, water-management and framing conditions can differ significantly.

Define loads and support conditions

Provide panel geometry, slope, edge support, point fixings, design wind, snow, maintenance and other imposed loads. Include load combinations and the applicable design standard.

The glass calculation should address intact and required broken-state scenarios. Ponding and blocked drainage must be considered by the project team where relevant.

Use a deliberate laminated make-up

Laminated glass is commonly used to retain fragments after breakage. The required plies, heat treatment and interlayer depend on loads, support, temperature, edge exposure and the required retention period.

Coordinate thermal and moisture performance

Enclosed skylights may require insulated glass, Low-E coating, warm-edge spacers and condensation analysis. Sealant compatibility, weep paths, edge cover and water drainage need system-level design.

For exposed laminate edges, confirm interlayer suitability, sealing details and maintenance conditions.

Plan installation and safe replacement

State panel orientation, lifting points, temporary support, access and replacement sequence. Large or shaped overhead panes may require dedicated lifting frames and delivery planning.
