Laminated Glass Interlayers: PVB, SGP and EVA Compared
The interlayer is central to how laminated glass behaves after breakage and over its service life. PVB, ionoplast products commonly referenced as SGP, and EVA can all form durable laminates, but they are not interchangeable. Selection should follow the application, support condition, environment and verified performance.

PVB: the established general-purpose option
PVB is widely used for safety glazing and is available in clear, coloured and acoustic grades. It offers strong adhesion and proven processing routes when laminate edges and moisture exposure are properly managed.
Acoustic PVB can improve sound insulation in a suitable asymmetric build-up. Results should be based on tested or calculated assemblies rather than the interlayer name alone.
Ionoplast or SGP: higher stiffness where engineering requires it
Ionoplast interlayers can provide greater stiffness and post-breakage capacity than standard PVB in suitable conditions. They are often considered for structural glass, railings, canopies and minimally supported panels.
The glass design must still be calculated for loads, temperature, load duration, support and breakage scenarios. A brand name is not a substitute for engineering.
EVA: processing and decorative flexibility
EVA is used in selected architectural and decorative laminates and can suit encapsulated inserts or particular manufacturing workflows. Formulation, certification and long-term edge conditions vary by supplier, so project evidence matters.
