Large architectural glass panels for an international transit project

Architectural Glass Packaging and Export Shipping Guide

Architectural glass can leave the factory within tolerance and still arrive damaged if packing, loading or site handling is poorly coordinated. Export packaging should be designed around panel geometry, weight, coatings, route, climate, lifting equipment and installation sequence.

Packing design must match glass size, weight, route and destination handling.

Choose packaging for the glass and route

A-frames, steel racks and timber crates serve different sizes, weights and handling methods. Confirm whether packaging is returnable, containerised, open-top or break-bulk and whether fumigation or material rules apply.

Oversized, curved or coated panels may need special supports, orientation and protective clearances.

Prevent surface and edge damage

Use suitable interleaving, separators, edge protection and restraint without creating point loads. Keep incompatible materials away from coatings and sealants.

Moisture protection should reduce condensation risk while allowing the agreed transport conditions. Prolonged outdoor storage in unopened packs should be avoided unless specifically designed for it.

Label for traceability and installation

Labels should connect each pane to the panel schedule, elevation, crate and production record. Mark centre of gravity, lifting points, weight, orientation and opening sequence.

See packaging and shipping and the quality and traceability process.

Coordinate destination handling before dispatch

Verify site access, crane or forklift capacity, spreader bars, rack stability, storage area and safe unloading procedure. A packing list is not an unloading plan.

  • Delivery sequence by elevation
