Tempered and laminated glass are both used in safety glazing, but they solve different risks. The correct choice depends on how the glass is loaded, what happens after breakage, how the edges are supported and which building code governs the location.

How tempered glass behaves

Tempered glass is heated and rapidly cooled to create surface compression. It is stronger than annealed glass of the same nominal thickness and, when broken, typically fragments into relatively small particles. It is often selected for doors, shower enclosures, façade panels and other locations requiring safety glazing and increased strength.

All holes, notches and edgework must be finished before tempering. After breakage, a monolithic tempered pane generally no longer forms a barrier.

How laminated glass behaves

Laminated glass bonds two or more panes with one or more interlayers. If a pane breaks, fragments can remain adhered to the interlayer. This retention can be important for overhead glazing, balustrades, canopies, security glazing and areas where a residual barrier is required.

Interlayer type and thickness also influence structural behaviour, edge stability, acoustics, UV filtering and security performance.

When both processes are combined

Many demanding applications use heat-treated laminated glass: two tempered or heat-strengthened panes bonded with an interlayer. This combines increased pane strength with fragment retention, but the build-up must be engineered as a complete assembly.

For example, glass railing and glass canopy systems often need laminated heat-treated glass, subject to local code and structural design.

Standards and project decisions

China-based product references include GB/T 15763.2-2025 for tempered glass and GB/T 15763.3-2025 for laminated glass. Export projects may require EN, ASTM, AS/NZS or another local standard.

Do not choose between the products using a single statement such as ‘tempered is stronger’ or ‘laminated is safer’. Define the risk: impact, fall, overhead breakage, forced entry, acoustics, structural loading or continued barrier performance.
