Curved architectural glass on a conservatory facade

Curved Architectural Glass: Geometry, Tolerances and Procurement

Curved architectural glass is manufactured to project geometry and may be annealed, heat-treated, laminated or insulated. It demands earlier coordination than flat glass because forming, optical quality, tolerances, measurement and packing are closely connected.

Unambiguous geometry and agreed measurement methods are essential for curved glass.

Describe the geometry without ambiguity

Submit radius, arc length, chord, rise, overall height, straight tangents, bending axis and convex/concave viewing direction. Identify whether dimensions refer to the inner, outer or centreline surface.

A coordinated 2D drawing and 3D model are useful, but the contractual geometry and tolerance method must still be explicit.

Select a feasible glass build-up

Curving feasibility depends on pane thickness, coating, frit, heat treatment, lamination and IGU construction. Minimum radius and maximum size vary with equipment and make-up.

Engage the processor before freezing the façade grid. See the curved glass overview and glass processing guide.

Agree tolerances and optical criteria

Define radius deviation, twist, edge displacement, straightness, local bow and overall dimensions, together with the measurement support and temperature. Visual evaluation should consider reflection distortion, roller wave, anisotropy and coating appearance.

A full-size mock-up can reveal transitions between curved and flat panels and the effect of framing, sealant and daylight.

Plan handling and replacement

Curved panes need orientation marks, purpose-designed supports and packing that prevents point loads. Confirm lifting method, crate sequence, unloading clearance and how replacement units will be measured.
