Glass Railing Specification Guide: Safety, Supports and Laminated Make-Up
A glass railing is a safety-critical system, not an isolated pane. Glass make-up, support conditions, fittings, edge quality, loads, handrail strategy and post-breakage behaviour must be designed together and checked against the local code.

Begin with the complete system
Identify whether the glass is base-shoe supported, point fixed, post mounted or framed. Provide panel width and height, support dimensions, gaps, handrail condition and all fixing details.
The structural engineer should define line loads, concentrated loads, wind loads where relevant and required load combinations.
Define breakage and retention requirements
Many railing applications use laminated heat-treated glass so fragments remain bonded after breakage. Interlayer type and thickness influence residual behaviour, but suitability depends on support, temperature and load duration.

Coordinate holes, edges and hardware
Hole diameter, countersink, edge distance, cut-outs and polished edges must match the approved hardware drawings before heat treatment. Changes after tempering are generally not possible.
Avoid glass-to-metal contact by using suitable gaskets, setting blocks and sleeves. Confirm torque and installation sequence with the system supplier.
Specify evidence and inspection
State the governing code, glass standard, calculations, test evidence, heat-treatment requirements, markings and visual criteria. Thickness should not be selected from a generic table without project engineering.
